Vino Rosso Controcorrente 2024
"Controcorrente" (meaning Countercurrent) is the iconic debut label and philosophical statement of brothers Francesco and Giacomo Vaira. Conceived in 2019 in Vergne, this wine stems from a radical choice: crafting a 100% single-varietal expression of Nebbiolo clone Rosé, an ancient and highly aromatic clone often sidelined in modern viticulture due to its pale chromatic intensity.
Sourced from a 0.50-hectare plot with 24-year-old vines perched at 390 meters on limestone-clay soil, "Controcorrente" intentionally steps outside traditional DOC/DOCG boundaries to champion pure freedom as a table Red Wine. Farming is natural and free of synthetic chemicals. Cellar work relies on wild yeast fermentation in open vats with a portion of whole clusters (20% in the 2023 vintage). Following a gentle press, it undergoes malolactic fermentation and matures for 9 months in neutral Slavonian oak tonneaux. Unfined, unfiltered, and minimally sulfited, it delivers a diaphanous, hauntingly floral, and silky Nebbiolo experience.
