Barolo Albe 2021
The Barolo DOCG 'Albe' 2022 by G.D. Vajra (a revered, family-owned benchmark winery in Vergne, Barolo) serves as a radiant and authentic tribute to traditional Langhe winemaking and its founding Masters. The wine represents an assemblage of three distinct high-altitude estate vineyards—Fossati, La Volta, and Coste di Vergne—perched between 380 and 480 meters above sea level. Facing varying orientations from South/South-East to South-West, these plots capture the morning sun at different intervals, granting the Vaira family the privilege of witnessing three unique sunrises ('Albe') every day.
Pioneers of certified organic and sustainable viticulture since 1971 under Aldo Vaira, the estate practices spontaneous cover cropping to enhance biodiversity, soil aeration, and erosion control. The 2022 harvest demanded rigorous manual precision, featuring triple sorting (in the vineyard, on sorting tables, and berry-by-berry post-destemming). Winemaking follows classic protocols in truncated oak vats with extended 36-day submerged-cap macerations. Maturation takes place for 22 months in large 40, 50, and 75-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks, bottled in June 2025. Vajra's 2022 Albe emerges as a vibrant, juicy, and crystalline Barolo, soaring with dried rose, red-berry fruit, sea-breeze minerality, and silky, fine-grained tannins.
