Derthona Montemarzino 2023

The "Derthona Montemarzino" stands as one of the most fascinating and successful ventures undertaken by Luca Roagna. Renowned worldwide for his traditionalist, rigorous, and immortal Barbaresco and Barolo reds, Roagna recognized the immense potential of Timorasso—the only white Piedmontese variety capable of yielding a structure, complexity, and cellaring potential comparable to Nebbiolo. This wine is sourced from a selected vineyard located in Montemarzino, one of the most historic and elevated municipalities of the Colli Tortonesi, featuring stark limestone-marl soils and a cool, windy microclimate.

In the cellar, Luca Roagna applies the exact same rigorous, ancestral philosophy used for his legendary reds. The 100% Timorasso grapes, harvested at peak maturity from vineyards farmed with no systemic chemicals, undergo a completely spontaneous fermentation via indigenous yeasts in large, neutral wooden vats. True to the estate's signature style, the wine undergoes an incredibly long, quiet aging period on its fine lees (sur lie) in large oak casks, lasting for about 2 years, followed by extensive bottle rest before release.
