Picolit 2023
The Picolit by Marco Sara stands out as an authentic liquid treasure, honoring the noble tradition of Friuli's most revered native dessert wine. Known for centuries as the aristocrat of Italian sweet wines, the Picolit grape is notoriously rare due to flower abortion (acinellatura), which leaves each cluster with only a few, highly concentrated berries. Working organically in Povoletto within the Colli Orientali del Friuli zone, artisanal winemaker Marco Sara harnesses this low-yielding nature to craft a wine of breathtaking purity, tension, and depth.
The cellar management follows a strict low-intervention manifesto. Following a painstaking hand-selection, the fruit undergoes gentle drying to naturally boost its sugar and aromatic density. Fermentation triggers spontaneously with wild, indigenous yeasts in neutral oak casks, where the wine slowly matures. The hallmarks of Marco Sara’s Picolit are balance and freshness: the natural sweetness is perfectly countered by laser-sharp acidity and the intense mineral drive from the local ponca (marl and sandstone) soils, resulting in an aristocratic, vibrant, and incredibly long-lived sweet wine.
