Moscato d'Asti Grappa
Since the year 1000, Piedmont has been the chosen land for the Moscato grape variety, with its amber berries and unmistakable aroma. The grape variety arrived on the Ligurian coast around the 5th century BC with the Greek navigators and from there spread towards the North. The Statutes of Canelli already in the 1200s speak of Moscato vineyards.
At the end of the 15th century, Giovan Battista Croce, jeweler and enologist, brought sweet, aromatic, and low-alcohol wines to the table of the Duke of Savoy Carlo Emanuele. In 1511, the grape is mentioned as “Moscatellum” in the Statutes of La Morra.
From the vineyards of white tufa, clay, and calcareous marl in the Municipality of Canelli pro- come the grape pomace rich in all the aromatic nuances of Moscato which, sub- ject to gentle pressing, controlled fermentation and a slow distillation in a batch pot still in a water bath, give life to this grappa that evolves in Allier and Limousin oak barriques.
